Hutterites and Honey Bees | A Tour of Orland Colony

Just 25 miles west of our factory in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, sits a special community of Hutterites known as Orland Colony. Hutterites have been in South Dakota since the 1880s where they practice a traditional way of living that keeps them family-oriented and centered in their faith.

Gardening and beekeeping have become staples of the colony’s economy. But of course, keeping honey bees for Orland goes far beyond their own supply of honey.

Life in a Hutterite colony is all about community, and this rings especially true when it comes to their beekeeping practice.

Watch our tour of the Orland Colony and its beekeeping operation guided by Paul and Ricky Wurtz, the colony’s head beekeepers.
